Discover the legendary Villa Oasis in Marrakech, an exclusive property where the iconic French couturier Yves Saint Laurent lived and drew inspiration for his world-renowned collections.

History of Villa Oasis

Nestled within the legendary Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, Villa Oasis stands as one of the city’s most iconic private residences — a sanctuary of art, design, and heritage.

The Majorelle Era (1924–1962)

In 1924, French painter and explorer Jacques Majorelle acquired a palm grove on the outskirts of Marrakech. Passionately inspired by Morocco’s light, colors, and craftsmanship, he gradually transformed the land into an extraordinary botanical garden.

He later built a villa on the property, originally named Villa Bousafsaf, reflecting a refined Orientalist inspiration. The architecture combined:

  • Traditional Moroccan elements
  • Art Deco influences
  • Intricate zellige tiles
  • Carved wood details
  • Vibrant cobalt tones that would later become famous as Majorelle Blue

The villa became both his residence and artistic refuge — a living extension of his creative universe.

Decline and Threat (1960s–1970s)

After Majorelle’s death in 1962, the garden and villa fell into neglect. Maintenance costs were overwhelming, and by the late 1970s, the property was threatened by real estate development that could have erased this cultural treasure.

The Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Bergé Renaissance (1980)

In 1980, fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé purchased the property to save it from destruction.

Deeply in love with Marrakech, Saint Laurent found immense creative inspiration in Morocco. Together, they undertook a meticulous restoration project. The villa was:

  • Completely renovated
  • Renamed Villa Oasis
  • Transformed into an intimate private residence

The restoration was led by American architect Bill Willis and French interior designer Jacques Grange.

They preserved the spirit of Majorelle while enhancing the villa with:

  • Refined Moroccan craftsmanship
  • Antique collections
  • Art Deco furniture
  • Personal pieces belonging to Saint Laurent

A Creative Sanctuary

For Yves Saint Laurent, Villa Oasis became far more than a home. It was:

  • A retreat from Paris
  • A place of reflection and inspiration
  • A source of color and cultural influence that shaped his fashion collections

After his passing in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the Majorelle Garden, and a memorial was placed within the grounds — reinforcing the profound connection between the designer and this exceptional place.

Today, Villa Oasis remains a symbol of:

  • Artistic preservation
  • Cultural dialogue between France and Morocco
  • The enduring legacy of Majorelle, Bergé, and Saint Laurent

It stands as one of Marrakech’s most legendary residences — a true oasis of beauty, history, and timeless elegance.
